Hikikomori – Understanding the Roots

In Japan, Hikikomori (Japanese: ひきこもり or 引きこもり, lit. “pulling inward, being confined”, i.e., “acute social withdrawal”) are reclusive adolescents or adults who withdraw from society and seek extreme degrees of isolation and confinement. Hikikomori refers to both the phenomenon in general and the recluses themselves. (According to Wikipedia).

Dear Readers,

Today, I’m gonna introduce you to practice in Japan, which deals with individuals exhibiting impulsive confined/social withdrawal behavior which tends to have a long-lasting impact on behavioral and thinking patterns in the brain.

Now, to start with, let me put you in a situation where you’re undergoing multiple breakdowns, not just losing a job, but you are on a verge of losing family too, this includes cracks in relationships, fights, abuses and what not. This leaves you in a state of disapproval of your own individuality, hence you tend to downgrade your value by self-isolating yourself and your social life. This tends to lead you to a corner where you seclude yourself from the world and cut all the ties. Even your very existence would be hidden from the world as you tend not to answer any calls or respond to any texts by your family or friends.

Few of you might ponder upon few instances and compare this with the ongoing lockdown, but let me tell you something, people practicing Hikikomori practice it for more than just a year, they might do it for 2-4 years or their entire life depending on how they get over it and their will power to get over it. There are few instances of how many among them came out in public and followed their dreams withing 2 years or so. And there also have been incidents where an elderly who was practicing hikikomori lay dead in his flat for 2 months!!

So how does this happen out of a blue?

This doesn’t tend to happen all of a sudden, its a transition that happens over time, seclusion followed by social detox, followed by termination of social ties, followed by more “Me” time and the sickness. Loss of things and self under-estimation, slowly lead to a less painful but more emotionally distressing situation. The pain is felt over time with each and every move taken by the person slowly moving him a foot inside his house, the doors shut. No one knows what happens, hundreds of people try to meet him, thousands try to convince, but the desperation to not let it outstays. It doesn’t move an inch.

This is more than a medical condition, over time it has transformed into an art of living that is quite frequently exercised by individuals in Japan. Though it’s not just contained in geographical borders, different places consider and name this situation accordingly. For some, it might be depression, for some its loneliness, for others its anguish.

Logically Bright Picture?

Most of them upon an act of catalyst tend to come out in public and voice their opinion and ideas which paves their way to a better future. This doesn’t quite stop here, these people who’ve undergone this situation tend to teach and motivate others facing this to let them have a look at the shinier side of life, where they can just reset everything and give a fresh start.
